Tried again

This time I was in front of the screen for an hour and a half (I've been working on this a total of 3-4 hours), and actually saw the error. It is 'page fault in nonpaged area' and according to the web forums is pretty darn common but no really consistent solution seems to be popping out at me. I am tempted to contact Microsoft and see if I can get a refund. Troubleshooting a troublesome operating system is not my idea of a happy Thanksgiving, and some people have sought tech support and then the system wouldn't restore their old system, so they were left with a useless computer.
