I loved it

'The Big Bang Theory' finale closes with a big dose of heart [contains spoilers] I have only watched 'Big Bang Theory' fairly hit-or-miss throughout its tenure, although I do have several seasons on DVD, and hope to complete my collection. I just don't watch much live television and don't have cable.TV. But...I do love the show. So it was a great delight and a little sadness last night to be over at one of our friend's housing eating Chinese food from Jin Jin and it came on. :)

Christmas feast

Eggplant with tofu in garlic sauce with vegetable spring rolls! Yummy!  Thank you, Jin-Jin!

Tired

My rest of the day:
  1. Got an oil change at Valvoline and a new air filter.
  2. Went to the library and picked up a couple of books on orchids.
  3. Got a call from my boss (I have a boss!) about bringing two forms of ID on Monday.
  4. Picked up a friend for his appointment and took him there.
  5. Picked up another friend from work, home, and to the pharmacy.
  6. Stopped by Jin Jin with my friends and picked up dinner.
  7. Dropped them off, came home, ate kung pao tofu and spring rolls followed by some ice cream. I am now very stuffed.
  8. Spent some time on Facebook. Found an interesting article about Polari, the forgotten secret language of gay men, which I passed on to a friend.
  9. Listened to Pandora (the Bastille station) for awhile.
It's not even 8 pm. I'm pooped. I'd like to watch something, but right now I'm going to just take it easy, maybe close my eyes for a few minutes, but not necessarily nap this late in the day. A has to be at work at 8 am, and I'm giving him a ride, but I don't want to go to sleep just yet.

Eating the last of the Chinese food from Saturday

Which was garlic eggplant and tofu. Last night I finally got some much-needed rest. I'd been going to bed late, tossing and turning, not being able to get comfortable. I had physical therapy yesterday and YKWIA suggested my heating pad. So I took my mild muscle relaxer, put my pad beneath me (it turns off automatically after an hour, which is nice), and proceeded to fall asleep. I woke up about 4:30 in the morning without pain whatsoever. It was wonderful. It didn't last very long after I got up, even with a hot shower, but it helped me get some rest.

So this afternoon, I went to sleep on the heat again, supposedly for an hour, but it turned out to be two. Again, it's just great enough to let me sleep, but all I had to do was reach my hand up to about chest level and it hurts again. But hopefully that's a temporary thing. Now I'm awake, and I'm going to do some things around here, go through some things that didn't really get put away during the great clean up a week or two ago, that sort of thing. I'm listening to Ed Sheeran, which is conducive to that. I want to get the living room totally put away (There's not much to put away, so it's doable). I also need to get a few things ready for tomorrow, like filling up my medicine holder and the like. I watered all the plants once I got home, but I'd like to fill the aquarium as well. So, I have my evening planned out until bed, I guess. It's a quiet evening at home. I saw YKWIA earlier and took him on an errand, changed the pads under his cat litter box, and then we sat down and verified what was needed for a dinner we're having for a friend. The dessert will be baked here, as his oven's a little touchy, and while it works for most food, it's harder to bake when an oven needs adjusting. That'll be next week, so I have incentive to keep the house nice.

Okay, time to sort. I'll probably write later, but if not. Good night.

Whew!

It’s been a weird day. I mostly did some things around the house, ate, and played a bubble shooter game on my phone without much success of getting through level 23 (it’s based off of Disney Pixar’s movie Inside Out). A had called me earlier today and explained that the snow ploughs had not made it to his street but that he was about to go out and do some shoveling. I asked him to give me an update later. About 2 pm he called and said the plough had been through, everything looked good, and he’d shoveled the walks and driveway for me. They were almost out of coffee, and we’re getting temperatures around 0 degrees tonight and tomorrow morning, so I figured conditions would just worsen, so I went out and spent a half-hour digging out my car with a broom and a dustpan. Yes, really. I do need to invest in a snow shovel, after never needing any for years. But last year we had over 10 inches in each of two storms two weeks apart, and this time, while the official measure was over 9 inches, A and I each have about 10 or 11, as our parts of town got more snow. Add the drifting from the wind and it could go up to three feet in places.

After digging out where I could (and I’m counting that as exercise for my Habitica application), and only falling down once into a drift onto my butt, I managed to get out of my parking place, and then there was a moving truck taking up most of the space near the curve to the exit from the parking lot, so I had to go through the snowier area. I got stuck on my street, which never gets ploughed as far as I can tell, but shifting into reverse and then into first and second gear (which I’ve never done using an automatic) and got out and down the road. The next street and the one after that wasn’t bad, just narrower. Once I got to Man O’War, things were just wet, except for slush where people pulled out of other streets here and there. None of the right turn lanes had been ploughed, though, so we were having to turn from the right straight lane instead. I went down Man O’War and then another road that I knew was a snow route just to be okay, not the normal back way I go. Then I got to their street, which was pretty decent, and into the driveway. A and I went and got a few groceries for each of us, stopped by Jin Jin and got Chinese food, and then I headed home, as I wanted to get back by dark and the sun was already low on the horizon. I got home shortly before 6 pm, managed to make it back into the very same parking place I’d been in, after negotiating my street again.

I came in and one of my floor lamps (the newest, which I got three years ago), was leaning awfully badly, so I tried fiddling with it, and it totally came apart and broke, much to my frustration. I decided to walk away from the lamp and eat my kung pao tofu and spring rolls and calm down a bit. When I went back it was obvious that it was broken and not merely unscrewed, and that it was designed somewhat poorly. I salvaged the heavy glass shades off of the torchiere piece and the two reading lamps, and I’ll get rid of the rest when I take things to the dumpster, then look for another one that is similar. It means the living room is a bit dark, having only the original floor lamp over by the computer, and nothing will come on when I flip the switch next to the door, but I’ll eventually get another, maybe when I get my tax refund and have a little money to spend. Who am I kidding, that will all go to bills, I’m sure. :)

So now that I have released the lamp to the Great Beyond and I’ve eaten, I feel better. There are plenty of things to do tonight, but my back and neck are hurting somewhat from wrestling with the lamp (the base was very heavy, and the whole thing was nestled in a spot in the corner behind the couch, which reclined while I was trying to line up the base with the pole and screw it back together. I probably needed two people to even get as far as I could, but in the end, the screw would not pop up to where the pole could be screwed in, and plastic parts, beyond the metal pieces that were giving me fits, just crumbled, especially up in the light. Fortunately I didn’t break any of the shades (I did break one once before when the lamp fell over, and had to replace the two small shades with something similar). In retrospect, the lamp has never truly been completely vertical at 90 degrees to the floor since then, so it probably was on its way out for some time and I managed to keep it going for awhile by leaning it against the wall and putting it between other objects. Oh, well.

To be honest, I think I’m going to lie down for just a little while and then maybe watch something on DVD. Or read. I don’t know yet. I did do a little reading last night, but the book was terrible in terms of grammar so I returned it. It purported to be a history of Rome, but it was very cursory at best, treating the entire period from the founding of Rome to Augustus Caesar in few pages, and I had doubts of it getting any better. Plus, it focussed on battles rather than much of (in my opinion) the more interesting history of Rome, the social and political aspects. Anyway, considering I’ve taken graduate classes where I had to learn the history of the Republic and the Empire pretty thoroughly, this seemed inadequate, more like a listing of kings and emperors. I already had to memorise the entire list of Roman Emperors, I don’t need another listing. What I wanted was a nice overview to jog my memories on certain aspects of Roman history, and was disappointed. The download included another book on the history of Aegypt and one on the history of Greece, but I decided to not even try those.

Okay, the bedroom and perhaps getting comfy with a book (or a Kindle) is calling me. Oh, and probably I’ll just fall asleep for awhile anyway. :)

Yummy!

My friends bought me Kung Pao Kachi (pronounced 'kung pow kwachee'),  a spicy soy chicken dish,  in exchange for my going to Jin-Jin for all of us.  It was very good.  I normally have Kung Pao with tofu. Kachi does really taste like chicken,  or at least what I remember chicken tasting like.

Home for now

I have been so sleepy all day. I just want to take a nap, but I'm afraid I'll actually go to sleep. A and I might be going to the grocery tonight since they have plans with family tomorrow. I've been up since about 4:30 am straight, and of course had interrupted sleep all night, but that was my own fault. I just got something from Microsoft asking about the upgrade experience, which allowed me to not only rate but comment, so I told them about the compatibility report issue and alternative I used.

One thing I did not even think about doing when I was off (I did beforehand, but promptly forgot) was to get my allergy shots, so I did that today after work.

Last night a friend got us Chinese food from Jin Jin, and I got a fortune cookie but forgot to eat it. I just found it in my bag when I went to get a banana. It says: 'Ignore previous cookie.' :) Ha ha. It's been awhile; I don't remember what the last one said, but I remember I wasn't happy with it. So, good.

The sun is shining brightly through the windows, and the aquarium is producing a gentle fall of water. The fish are very happy to have full tanks. I love the late afternoons in my apartment. And the houseplants have bounced back where they were looking a bit peaked before I watered them. I just watered the outside ones as soon as I got home, because I forgot them.

I really do want to take a nap. Really. :) Instead, I guess since I've eaten dinner, I including a delicious if odd fortune cookie, I should head over there and discover what we're doing tonight, Brain. Of course, the answer is always 'try to take over the world'.

It feels so good to lie down

With my feet up  (although they haven't been swelling as much as they were earlier in the season).  I must admit,  I am tired and I have a headache,  so I'll be changing from merely resting to full-blown sleeping soon.

After work I had an appointment with my allergist and got my shots.  I've gone up a colour on the phial,  and I should soon be at a level where most people see improvement. Just changing medications helped me.  I am on levocetirizine,  which has been helping a great deal.

I came home for awhile,  then went to my friends' house.  I went to Jin-Jin and picked up some lovely vegetarian fare,  including Vegetable Egg Foo Yong and Kung  Pao Tofu, plus spring rolls. I also got fish food for my goldfish from Kroger,  also in the Chinoe shopping centre.  Then I headed back,  watched a couple of episodes of 'Wizards vs. Aliens'  and then came home.  Now I'm in a darkened room,  my headache is easing,  and I'm ready for bed.  The fish were very happy to get their food. Tomorrow is one of my early days, so I must get up earlier. So,  good night.

I consider any day

in which I wear a white skirt and white eyelet-lace jacket and don't get any of the following on either to be a good day:
  • any food at all, including the chilpotle black bean burger with all the trimmings this afternoon and the kung pao tofu sauce I had tonight
  • the gasoline I put in the car
  • the quart of oil I put in the car after checking it
Today after work I:
  • Returned two books to the library
  • Worked for two hours in the library tinkering with my résumé in preparation for a job application
  • Picked up food from Jin Jin for three of us
  • Watched a couple of new 'The Awesomes' episodes (a Hulu original series which is really great) with a friend--I think the second season may be even better than the first, at the rate they're going
  • Let him show me various other things online, including an episode of an (I kid you not) alien surfer chick series, 'Lightning Point', from Australia--yes, it's on Netflix
Now I'm home, and I really should work more on the cover letter, but I'm tired and ready for bed. I did check a few books out, including the one I was using as a guide to the résumé-building. I may look that over some once I go on into the bedroom. Okay, time for more ice water. I'm parched. Then it's time to take my contacts out and get into my sleep shirt. Good night.

I've had a quiet night enjoying being alone and having some 'me' time

relaxing to a Pandora channel for Loreena McKennitt and then watching the last two episodes of series one of 'Downton Abbey'. I really must watch the other two before I encounter many more spoilers--there was a trailer for series four on Facebook this morning that managed to give away something major and I'm going 'lalalalalalala' to make sure it doesn't really sink into my brain.

I must get up very early in the morning and take a friend to an appointment before work, so I'm going to keep this brief. Just wanted to check in. Turns out last night I got home and just didn't feel like going onto the computer. I'd had a nice meal of Chinese food from Jin Jin and a couple of episodes of 'Alphas', so it was a nice night, I was just tired. Oh, speaking of Chinese food, I saw two things on Facebook today that were hilarious. The first relates to Chinese food (can't vouch for the numbers):

Then there was this. Even our local YMCA shared this one (although like the other, I first saw it from George Takei):

Today I got a book on fitness for all everyone by the Mayo Clinic. It's full of useful info like how to start a cycling or walking programme, how to exercise for different conditions, etc. Now the trick is going to the Y and putting some of that into practice. I'm going to try to go after my gynaecology appointment tomorrow if I can.

Okay, that's enough for one night. Hope your week is going well. I'll try to write tomorrow. Good night.

I got home around 8:45 tonight, and was asleep by 9 pm

with the idea of taking a 45-minute nap that went till 11-something, when I was awoken by a thunderstorm. So I unplugged my phone, rolled over, and then woke up at 12:40. I've been downloading an Internet protection suite I bought for the computers and checking up on Facebook. I need to remember to take my Lantus before I head back to bed; my blood sugar's been kind of high since Sunday, when I apparently ate too much fruit and didn't have enough pen needles with me to take a second shot of Novolog during the snacking at the game. While our snacks are healthy compared to past years as we've aged (cheese, multi-grain crackers, veggies, and fruit, rather than chocolate), I have to balance the fruit, which can make my blood sugar go up, and the veggies, which can give me some terrible gastrointestinal issues for a day or two. Usually I manage that balance; this week I didn't.

I've been pretty busy at work. After work today I went by Jin Jin and got food for myself (tofu and eggplant in garlic sauce) and two friends and we ate and two of us watched videos. Then I took the other one to the store to get what he needed for his mom's birthday. I helped with a couple of chores and then came on home, going straight to bed. It was a little late to get into the pool, and frankly I was still pretty tired. I hate the groggy, tired feeling that my blood sugar makes me have. I go to the endocrinologist next week, so maybe she can do something to help. In the meantime, I'm trying to watch my diet more closely and taking my insulin as directed. I know that sounds simple, but sometimes eating can be complicated with diabetes. It's not sweets that are the issue, it's anything with carbs. And it's hard to remember to take your medicine as prescribed if you're feeling like your brain's turning to syrup because your glucose is up. That's how I feel sometimes when it's very high. I just want to feel normal again. I want the energy to do what I want, whether it's housework, working out, or having fun. And I want to not feel groggy, to feel like mentally I'm spot on. It affects my work, my personal life, everything I do.

Okay, enough ranting about my diabetes for the night. I'll go take my Lantus and head back to bed. Good night.

So the quiet night at home didn't quite work out, but I had a good time

I laid down for a nap, was half asleep, when a friend called asking me to bring some food over (they don't have a car, and don't drive). It was only after I called in the order and really woke up that I realised that they could have just had the Chinese restaurant they wanted it from delivered. A never thought about it, and YKWIA did, but was amused that I didn't think to just tell A that. At least I can blame it on being sleepy and tell myself they wanted the pleasure of my company. But I did get a small kung pao tofu that was really good (I'd already had some corn before they called), and YKWIA and I watched several episodes of 'Better Off Ted' and had a great time together. We also checked on a friend who'd had some surgery last week and is thankfully feeling better. It looks like we'll be playing the game Sunday. Now I'm (back) home, texting with Brandon and winding down for the night. Rain or shine, tomorrow I'm going to try to sleep in and not set an alarm. Some people over here in my neighbourhood are setting off early fireworks (I guess they're not sure they'll be able to tomorrow), but it's not too noisy.

I saw some revised hours for the High Street YMCA on Facebook a few minutes ago. Now they're open 7 am-6 pm, and are letting the runners from the Bluegrass 10K (which takes place near them, downtown) use their showers after the race. That's nice.

I hope you have a very safe and happy Independence Day (at least for those of you in the States). Good night.

Nearly neverending lunch saga

Today our cafeteria didn't really have much for a vegetarian (even the spinach had bacon in it), so I decided to order Chinese. I went to the website, thinking it would be easier to explain what I wanted, and the menu wouldn't load. We have old versions of Internet Explorer at work, so I thought fine, I'll try my phone. The mobile site worked fine up to the point where I submitted, and then it froze for minutes on end. So I called them and when I got to asking technical website questions was passed to someone who explained that I was using an old website through a third party and I should try their new website. So I went to that, got all the way to the end of ordering, and got a whole bunch of HTML code when I submitted. I called back and explained the situation, and went ahead and ordered via phone, but even then, the computer glitched in the middle and she had a little trouble with it, plus she was new and apparently I ordered something that had been on the online menu but was no longer actually on their menu, as I found out when the driver arrived (he was her husband). Undaunted, they had run over to the Kroger in the same shopping centre and bought eggplant to make my eggplant with tofu in garlic sauce. Because it had been a $12 minimum for delivery, I also got spring rolls and kung pao tofu, with the idea that I'd have food for dinner also. But from the time that I initially tried to order to the time I actually got my order, two hours had passed. But I must admit, that eggplant was the best I've ever tasted. Later, I was talking to YKWIA about some errands I needed to run for them, and he asked me to bring food from the same place. I drove over, called in the order, ran into Kroger for a few minutes, and then picked it up. As usual, they were very friendly and the owner was there. I explained the problem earlier. He said that the company that does their website was working on the code glitch and he was very sorry I'd had trouble. I went over to my friends' house and we ate, and of course the food was wonderful. I've eaten there several times and especially in the last year or so, when the new owner took over, it's been great. I've talked to him before at length about how they use very fresh food and have revamped the menu items and recipes. This was the first negative experience I've ever had, and it wasn't a matter of dining, just a coding glitch coupled with a defunct website that Google directed me to. Otherwise I would highly recommend them. They are Jin Jin on Chinoe Road.

YKWIA and I watched the final three episodes of 'Todd and the Book of Pure Evil', and while it is sad that there will be no more, it was a fun romp while it lasted. Also, I was satisfied with the ending, which both wrapped things up, yet left room for more episodes.

When I got home I started the bread machine, texted with Brandon awhile, but fell asleep, and just now got up and took the lovely herb bread out. This is the first time I've actually had dill seed like the recipe calls for, and it's wonderful. I think I'm going to bake another loaf for YKWIA and A. Okay, I think I'll do a few things before heading back to bed. Good night. It's been an interesting day, to say the least. But I handled it well, despite being a little hormonal (I listened to the Black Eyed Peas' 'Where is the Love' on the radio while driving into work this morning and spontaneously cried at the lyrics so no particular reason.) :)

Today I:

  • Started working on a project involving selecting and rating various resources.
  • Started working up a list of books to buy for the library come April 1st, when our vendor runs a special in which the discount is significantly higher than normal.
  • Caught up on my data entry.
  • Looked up some good books on reference. I mainly deal with medical issues, especially pediatric orthopaedics, so my general reference is a bit rusty, as my classes were in 1992-93, before the Web really got going to today's standards in terms of resources. So I'd like a refresher. I'm considering getting one from Amazon. Another, which is fairly expensive, can be checked out from the University of Kentucky's Education Library.
  • Discovered that my phone, which of course signs into my account through Google, is ever so helpful as to tell me how many minutes it will take to any place I search for on the web, even if I'm searching at home or work. In this case, it was the Education Library. But it's also told me how long it would take to get to various doctors' offices that I call because part of my non-librarian duties is to get referrals from primary care physicians when required.
  • Talked to my mother, checked on everyone, and caught up with what's going on with them.
  • Went over to my friends' house. Had wonderful Chinese food. Jin Jin may be as good or even better than one I've loved for years, Great Wall. I had kung pao tofu. Yummy.
  • Did some grocery shopping at both Good Foods Co-op and Kroger. [Good Foods had both celeriac and vegetable bouillon cubes (well, more like rectangular solids), both of which have been hard to find at Kroger of late.]
  • Watched an episode of 'Waiting for God'. It was great. I do like the show immensely. Tom and Diana are wonderful characters.
  • Came on home about 11 pm, and I should probably go to bed soon. Last night I was up till 1 am on the Internet ordering some gifts for a friend for no particular special occasion.
So it's been a full day. I decided not to take tomorrow off after all, but I think I may take Friday off instead; the weather's supposed to be better and it'll make for a three-day weekend. There were a few advantages to doing a midweek break, but I still think Friday will be better overall. And barring any emergencies, I should have the day to myself.

Okay, on that note, I think I'll go on to sleep. I'm already in bed, typing on the laptop. :) So I'll put it away and hopefully wake up a little earlier than I did this morning (it was about 7:45, and while I made it to work on time, I wasn't sure that was going to be the case). Tomorrow I must remember to pick a book on hold up from the public library called Doktor Glass. Good night.

Fortune cookie fortune of the day:

'A house without books is like a room without windows.'

:)

And yes, 'American Dad!' was very, very funny. Plus I got a calendar scroll/menu from Golden Wok that is actually kind of cute as advertising goes, and their food was nummy. :)

Good to be home

Just got in, ate something, called about a couple of prescriptions (one of which didn't transfer when I changed pharmacies) and updated my Java and Flash Player, along with taking Firefox up to version 5.0. All that took about fifteen minutes.

I feel pretty well, and not particularly sleepy, which is good given the fact that I've been up since 5 in the morning. I got out to South Broadway, accidentally got off a bus stop ahead of where I meant to, and then proceeded down to Rite-Aid. I signed up for one of their cards (does anyone NOT have a loyalty card these days?) because a 500 count bottle of generic ibuprofen was only $6.99 (regularly almost $20, and even the 100 count was more expensive). I went down to the MRI place, went through the paperwork, and got taken back promptly. They were very nice. I would highly recommend Lexington Diagnostic. They were happy with my choice of clothes; I only had to take my bra off due to the hook and eye closures in the back. They gave me earplugs, put my neck in a sort of cradle, stuffed lots of foam in to isolate my neck, and then put something that completed the ring around my neck and that was a little confining. It was an open MRI, but it can still get a bit close, but they put a fan on and that really helped, since I had fresh air circulating. I really appreciated it. The whole thing took about a half hour, less time than when I had my brain done. It's somewhat hard for me to lie still for that amount of time, but I did okay. A certain amount of vibration kind of made my neck and arms ache afterwards, and I was glad to get out of there, but it was okay.

I came out to get my satchel and put my bra back on and found that the locker was screaming. That would be the ringtone I promised to put on my phone for my friends. I talked briefly with one of them and consequently missed the bus by about two minutes. Since I had 70 minutes before the next one, I headed down to Waller Center (it used to be Imperial Plaza), intending to have Backyard Burger when it hit me that the Great Wall Chinese restaurant, my favourite in town and home of Tofu Goodness (also known as sesame tofu, which is fried tofu with a sesame sauce and broccoli) was also in the shopping centre. So I went there. I'm used to carryout and eating it at home (at least when I had a car), but I had it nice and fresh and probably burned my tongue three times on the tofu, it was so hot, but it was wonderful. The only trouble was I forgot to take my insulin until I got to work. I do that sometimes when I'm out and eat.

I only did the library stuff for about a couple of hours, since I didn't get into work until a little after noon. Then it was data entry. I left just a bit early.

I'm taking off next Friday so I can have a four-day weekend, and so we're going to have my backup person do the entries that day. She'll sit with me sometime next week to refresh her memory, and this will be a trial run in case I take vacation or am sick.

Okay, I have to get something done for a friend. I'll try to write later. Take care.

This is great--and so true

A Very Special Message: David Mamet Draws a Cartoon, a link I got from Joe.My.God, is wonderful. Click on the link to see the actual cartoon, which says (in case you have trouble reading) [spelling is exactly as it is on the image]:

The Chinese Restaurateurs' Assn.
of the United States
would like to extend our thanks
TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE.
We do not completely understand
your dietary customs
but we are proud and grateful
that your God
insists you eat our food
on Christmas

I think it's hilarious. (It works for Pagans, too. However, I've noticed as time goes by that more Chinese restaurants in this area seem to close for Christmas, including my favourite, The Great Wall.)

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Well, it's 1 am

Soon it will be 3 am instead of 2 am. I'm going to bed, having finished the game notes. Had a good day at work; I was a little too bouncy for my tastes, and managed to insert my foot into my mouth is a most spectacular way (twice), but survived without really offending anyone. And there was nummy Bean Curd Szechuan-style from Golden Wok. Will write more tomorrow. Good night.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Ah, Tofu Goodness

also known as Tofu in Sesame Sauce--from Great Wall over on Waller Avenue--is a wonderful thing. Basically it's fried tofu with broccoli in a sesame sauce with peppers and sesame seeds. My stomach is very happy. I got two fortune cookies:

'Don't let statistics do a number on you' and 'It's better to be the beak of a hen than the tail of an ox'.

Wednesday, May 07, 2008

Hi, how are you doing?

I know I still haven't written much of anything, even though I'd like to comment on:

Still, it's very late, so that will have to wait; but those are some of the issues churning in my mind.

I spent most of the day in bed and didn't feel well, so I didn't really make it out to blog even though I had the time. I'm feeling a little better now, although it's definitely time to go back to bed. I will get back on track, really. Good night.
