Here's the kindler, gentler approach.

Of course, my theory is that librarians are the worst for keeping books past their due dates. We're just lucky that many libraries exempt staff from fines. Too bad it doesn't work for all libraries. 'But madam, I was simply trying to keep your books in the safest place I knew...my own bookshelves.' Yes, I have paid fines, and there are a couple of books for my thesis I think I've technically paid for twice now, although they were returned safe and sound. Sigh.
