Is there a cognition issue? Was the mother in some form of psychotic fugue brought on by the possibility of losing a child, or dealing with hormone-driven mental illness? Was she merely callous and self-serving?
I'm reserving judgement for now; the two stories are so far apart.
But it's certainly disturbing.
