Because he actually thinks independently and has integrity, such as his criticism of ad released by an anti-Kerry veterans group that is at odds with the Navy's records and the man who recommended Kerry for commendation after his life was saved. Ironically, the group is named 'Swift Boat Veterans for Truth'.
Veterans come from all walks of life, all political backgrounds, and certainly no one should expect them to agree. But I think it's degrading to all veterans--and to the memory of those who were killed in action--to go back and try to reinterpret events for political purposes; I would feel the same way if it were proven that Kerry's campaign were doing so. However, at least we can go to the original documents and verify the veracity. I'm still waiting for proof of Bush's service, and I think it's sad that combat veterans are taking the side of someone who never served in war--yet has used his military service to support his activities as Commander-in-Chief, then sent thousands of men and women into combat on at best faulty intelligence, with the potential of miring us into another boggy war that could drag on for years.
Somehow, I don't think John McCain would have handled things in the same way.
