There is a fine line between aiding and enabling
and although you do care for a person deeply, sometimes it is more important to let him experience the true consequences of his actions or choices. But it doesn't mean you stop caring about the person or even stop worrying about his welfare. Some people need to hit rock bottom before things really begin to change. That's especially important of someone in the grip of an addiction. Sometimes when you care, the best thing to do is step back and fight down the urge to rescue. But it is hard--and far harder for the person himself, I'm sure, to endure the mess he's made. I have to keep reminding myself of that lately.
