Paul Dini: Superhero cartoon execs don't want largely female audiences

In an interview with Kevin Smith, writer and television producer Paul Dini complained about a worrying trend he sees in television animation and superhero shows in particular: executives spurning female viewers because they believe girls and women don't buy the shows' toys.

Vi at agelfeygelach transcribed part of Dini's conversation with Smith on the Fat Man on Batman podcast, during which he talks about the cancellation of Young Justice, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, and Tower Prep. He explains that studios are looking to capture younger male viewers, "boys who are into goofy humor, goofy random humor," and that they aren't interested in the older Young Justice audience.

YKWIA brought this to my attention. It's just sickening that good shows are axed because executives think girls just like pretty pink ponies rather than superheroes and heroines and aren't seen as buying the dolls we call action figures. Grrr....

Sexist Peer Reviewer Suggests Study Needs Male Authors

In woefully ironic turn of events, the reviewer of a rejected, solely female-authored manuscript examining gender bias in academia recommended that the scientists add in a couple of men to their team to make their research more scientifically robust.

“It would probably also be beneficial to find one or two male biologists to work with (or at least obtain internal peer review from, but better yet as active co-authors), in order to serve as a possible check against interpretations that may sometimes be drifting too far away from empirical evidence into ideologically biased assumptions,” the anonymous reviewer wrote.

Because, of course, the gender of an author matters more than the evidence or methodology.

Until today

I had not looked at the contenders for the Kentucky Derby (I'm a bad Kentuckian, I'm sure, because of it). I have to admit, I tend to like grey horses, followed by black, so I was happy to see Frosted in the running. I also like the breeding of Bolo. Finally, I like Carpe Diem's name (it means 'seize the day' in Latin). I won't rank them, but it would be nice to see one of them win. :)

Ben E. King, the smooth, soulful baritone who led the Drifters on “There Goes My Baby,” “Save the Last Dance for Me” and other hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and as a solo artist recorded the classic singles “Spanish Harlem” and “Stand by Me,” died on Thursday in Hackensack, N.J. He was 76.

One more post tonight

It was a good day. I got some things done I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. I got a little done on the house, but also applied for a job, got my car taken care of, got a nap in, watched a DVD, had some quiet time alone (and it was fun), then had a lovely dinner (thanks to a friend) from Gumbo Ya Ya, weathered a storm with hail that came up as I was travelling to get dinner, watched 'The Big Bang Theory' with my friends, and watched an episode of 'House of Anubis' with YKWIA, Now I'm home. The house still needs work, but I've run out of time on my 'free day', so I'll just have to work a little each day to get it nice and ready for company again. It shouldn't take too long; things aren't that bad. Tomorrow I have to get up very early because it's allergy shot day, so I go in early to work, and it's almost midnight, so I should head on to bed. Good night.

This kid's family couldn't afford all those spiffy action figures (read, dolls for boys), so he made his own out of twist ties--and they're amazing!
