Two new shirts

from the American Library Association, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary, so these are vintage designs they've brought back from the past.

 

Happy Independence Day! Happy 250th Anniversary, America!

I'm not doing much. It's been really hot (heat index of 108°F) here, although it's a little better since some thunderstorms came through last night, but I don't think I'll go downtown and celebrate. I will babysit the dogs, two of which are terrified of fireworks.

I do love the Fourth. It used to be my favourite holiday. Over the years, that's sort of faded, I guess. I used to go downtown for the festival, but it stopped having many craft vendors, and the art vendors were too pricey. Maybe it's changed now. Hopefully. When I worked at the old Shriners, we could park at work, which was right across from the Idle Hour Country Club and Golf Course, which allowed us an excellent view from the front lawn to watch a wonderful fireworks show. To view downtown, I'd have to deal with parking and a lot of traffic and crowds. I just don't feel like doing that for 20 or 30 minutes of wow.

So my main way to celebrate is wearing my new Kentucky Blood Centre shirt, which celebrates the 250th anniversary of the founding of our country. I didn't actually earn it. I tried, though. I went yesterday, and they had to turn me away because my iron was too low. They went ahead and gave me the T-shirt and a coupon for a pint of Blue Bell ice cream anyway, which was very nice. I can try again in three days, and I'll probably come back Saturday to see if it'll be up by then. Considering I'm post-menopausal and take iron pills, I was a little surprised.

Anyway, here is me a year ago at work, in a silly headband I wore at the reception desk (thanks to recreation therapy). I enjoyed doing things like that because the families seemed to like little touches like that. Besides, it was fun to get a little silly sometimes. Then there's a picture I took this morning in my blood centre shirt.

Just as a reminder

We're heading into that time of the year. No, I'm not talking about Autumn, although happy Mabon. I'm talking about Banned Books Week, which this year is October 5th through 11th. George Takei has been named Honorary Chair this year.

So...

I have the t-shirt that says this that I bought from the ALA. Also, the bumper sticker. Always good to remind people. So take up a banned book this year and read or re-read it. Better yet, fight for the rights of others to read them. So many libraries, schools, librarians, and teachers are facing challenges across the nation right now. I'm really interested in seeing The Librarians for that reason, although I may wait till it streams somewhere if I can.

 It said, "Don't follow me--I walk into walls." I need this shirt.

Wearing a shirt to the DMV

that says 'You are about to exceed the limits of my medication' which our friend Tammy got me is probably not a great idea, but I went ahead and went down there, after filling up the gas tank, using the Kroger points to get it for $2.29. There was a line at the DMV, but it moved quickly. I was behind a blind lady and her caretaker, who were very sweet. I had everything ready when I got up there, got my new registration (it looks different now, and the sticker is a weird greyish white colour that looks kind of rubbery, instead of the normally brightly-coloured ones). After that I headed to the library, got three new books, including one on a 19th-century axe murder (no, not the Lizzie Borden case), and two on diet and wellness, and then got my parking ticked validated and went on out. I decided to go to the Chinoe Kroger (it's smaller, and easier to get in and out of, and got some drinks, some ice, some hand soap, and some menstrual pads. I went ahead and put the new sticker on the licence plate. I haven't eaten lunch yet (and did resist buying food, because for some reason after the burritos this morning, I'm just not hungry yet). I'll probably eat that here about 2 pm or so, unless I get hungry sooner. Newk's may be for dinner, though. I haven't looked to see if anything's playing at the Cinemark theatres that I have free tickets to, but frankly, I've put up the windows, it's nice outside, so I may just stick around here and watch a DVD or Netflix. Hmmm, I've been wanting to re-watch Galaxy Quest, which I have on VHS but not on DVD--but it is on streaming for Netflix. That's a possibility.

Just got home

and I'm very tired, although I've been managing to get up early despite the whole springing-forward thing. I took a friend to an appointment, got some food, watched some of 'Dan Vs.' and then watched the entire 'Children of the Stones' series (7 two-part episodes), an intriguing and good British children's series from the 1970s that oddly scared the bejeesus out of an entire generation of Britons. I didn't find it scary, just creepy in places. But it was a decent story. Next up from Netflix DVDs we have Jug Face, which promises to be quite disturbing and I'm not sure if I'll like it, but hey, I'll give it a try. Then I backed up my friend's computer, came home, and went online to try to order a book through interlibrary loan, but unfortunately it's just been published and you can't borrow a book at our public library through interlibrary loan if they haven't been published for a year yet. So no go on that, which is a bit disappointing. Now, I have to admit, I'm a little sleepy, so I'm going to head on to bed quite soon.

Yesterday I ordered a shirt from Blue Box Tees that looks much like my 'Big Bang Theory' Soft Kitty shirt but has a Dalek on it.

Today's weather was glorious, but it's going to go downhill tomorrow, bringing rain and snow and cold, cold temperatures. :( But today it was 72 and wonderful, so it was worth whatever winter may be left, I suppose.

The other day I gave blood, and the phlebotomist was somewhat distressed to find that the largest shirts they had on the Blood Mobile were medium, meaning, of course, that I couldn't wear one. She asked me my size and asked if they could send it to me, and I said that would be fine, but not to worry about it, it was okay. I didn't think much about it, and I didn't really expect her to follow up on it. Today I had a package crammed into my little mailbox, a Kentucky Blood Center T-shirt in 3X. Thank you all. I do appreciate it.

Well, I found one additional benefit to posting about my life

Blood supplies are pretty low this time of year, so I'm getting appeals from the Kentucky Blood Center, with a twist. If you donate at KBC during their Summer4Life promotion, which runs through September 14th, you are automatically entered to win a 2012 Toyota RAV4. Now, I would donate regardless, but as someone who doesn't own a car, this did, I must admit, pique my interest. Granted, I probably couldn't afford the taxes and delivery costs to actually accept the prize, but it would be fun to win, even though I have some issues with SUVs. :) At least, as SUVs go, it's a small one, not one of those types that take over the road. Anyway, I thought I might schedule a donation this Saturday (although the weather may be an issue, as it will be very hot), but I didn't know how long it has been since my last donation, and whether I'd be eligible. By searching this blog, I was able to find out that it was April 24th, so I should be able to donate then. We'll see. I am all about donating when possible, but waiting for a bus in 104 degree weather is not good).

I got two t-shirts in the mail this morning. One is for a friend, which I think he'll enjoy immensely, and the other is a Miskatonic University Department of Library Sciences shirt with chains on the book with a phrase in Latin around the design that translates to 'fire is to be used as a last resort'. That sounds awful if you're not familiar with Lovecraftian Mythos books. :) The shirts were from www.offworlddesigns.com, the same people who did my League of Extraordinary Librarians shirt and the cat in glasses reading a book that so many people compliment me on. I would highly recommend them in terms of their products and service. I am definitely wearing this shirt to the game Sunday, even if it is black and it's supposed to be 102 degrees (slightly less than Saturday).

Wish I wasn't as big or they were bigger

Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, who is Japanese-American, has designed a couple of T-shirts to benefit the people who went through the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami. One says 'Not Alone' with the colours of the Japanese flag in the letters and the Linkin Park symbol done small to the right. The other has a white origami butterfly on a black t-shirt with the Linkin Park symbol underneath. I particularly like that one. Unfortunately, they only go up to extra-large. I do best in a 2X-3X.

Can you tell I've been checking out Northern Sun?

My favourite T-shirt is on sale for only $9 but I'm afraid to wear it because I might just get lynched, living in the Bible belt as I do. It says 'God was my co-pilot, but we crashed in the mountains and I had to eat him.' So wrong. Nothing against God Himself, but I hate the whole 'God is my co-pilot' thing.

I just ordered

a T-shirt that says 'League of Extraordinary Librarians' from Off World Designs. :)

There was also one on clearance of a cat in spectacles reading a book that was just $5, so I grabbed that one, too.

I really wish they still had my size in the clearance shirt for 'All I ever needed I learned from Cthulhu'. :)

Every Cthulhu hunter should watch for the yellow sign
