Monday morning

I was putting my bags together to take to work, and I was startled by something going by the window. I grabbed my phone and carefully went outside and looked for the unexpected visitor, and snapped some quick photos before she went around the building.

Sorry for the quality--these are cropped pictures that were taken at first light and so they could be better. But I think you can see the deer pretty well. I live in town, but near a reservoir, creek, marsh, and a small wood. So I guess it's not all that surprising that you'd find deer here. I've written before of how I once saw two young ones running by the church at Man O'War and Beaver Creek, which is not that far away. But this one actually ambled slowly by my living room windows, which are lower than the parking lot. Later, on my way to a friend's house to pick him up for work, I had to use my anti-lock brakes when a duck waddled into the road. She was in no hurry to leave, but I drove around her. So it was a wildlife sort of day. :)

Tonight I:

  1. Picked up a friend from work
  2. Helped him revise his résumé.
  3. Helped him apply for a part-time job on Indeed.com.
  4. Searched several businesses and job sites for other jobs.
  5. Helped work out something with his insurance.
  6. Gave him a couple of half-bottles of vitamins I had extra and fed him some homemade bread and shredded cheese.
  7. Took him to get some medicine.
  8. Dropped him off where he is staying.
  9. Took some papers to another friend's.
  10. Filled out the paperwork.
  11. Watched an episode of 'Mako Mermaids' with him.
  12. Visited for awhile.
  13. Called and checked on another friend who has rescued a duckling, which has imprinted on her bird dog. I'd like to see them cuddled up together.
  14. Took my friend to the grocery.
  15. Brought the groceries in so he could put them away, and also I helped with the heavier things.
  16. Found my heating pad, which he's borrowed.
  17. Was sent home with bread, homemade not-quite-right-but-edible bread, and creamy cucumber dressing.
  18. Found not one but two cups at home to take to YKWIA tomorrow.
  19. Made some burritos and ate them, along with the not-up-to-standards bread, with a little spreadable fruit, and some pretzel Goldfish crackers.
  20. Cooled off in air conditioning and drank cool water.
Now I'm ready to go to bed, I think; it's almost 1 am.
    Things to do tomorrow.
  1. Get up early and work on the kitchen.
  2. Take a book back to the library before it opens (it was due today).
  3. Go to a friend's at 11 am and help him with some things.
  4. Take him to an appointment and drop him off.
  5. Pick him up and take him home.
We did the grocery run tonight, so I don't think we need to go tomorrow, although they didn't have enough creamer quarts for the whole week. I may help him make some food tomorrow, too. Sunday isn't planned at all, beyond the normal cleaning. So anyway, I'll be doing some running around, but I may have a chance to do some stuff at home, too.

Okay, I'm going to go read and then it's on to bed. Good night!

I brake for ducklings

And fortunately I have anti-lock brakes,  as they engaged when two female ducks and their dozen or more offspring decided to cross the road as I was headed home from taking a friend to the grocery.  :)  Yay for anti-lock brakes!

Update

Thanksgiving dinner has been postponed till Saturday, tomorrow I'm going to go get a friend's meds and we're going to watch Inside Out, Sunday there will be no game. Today I've spent time with my friends, reading to the one who's been in bed most of the day trying to keep ahead of the pain left from his procedure. Also, my other friend and I went for a nice walk with one of the dogs, who was very excited when she saw ducks in the pond, but fairly indifferent when she encountered geese. The only problem with walk was that the entire asphalt circuit was covered in piles of what I surmise to be goose poop, so we really had to watch where we were going. Anyway, it was a restful and pleasant day. I have some things to do here at home, but I'm going to take a short nap first, since I didn't sleep well last night.

Anyway, if you celebrated Thanksgiving on, well, Thanksgiving, then I hope you had a safe and happy one with loved ones.

Almost sad

My ride and I came across a duck which was stunned in the middle of the road tonight right by my apartment complex. We couldn't tell if it were hurt, although it was flapping its wings like making snow angels while on its back. We were trying to figure out what to do for it, and weren't sure, so she dropped me off and went back. I was checking on the animal control number (figuring that they could either help it, or if it were too far gone, put it out of its misery). Meanwhile Lindsey called, and another lady had stopped for it and had gotten it off the road and it went running into the bushes. Hopefully it isn't hurt badly. I suspect it may have been the duck my apartment leasing office feeds, the one that took a dip in our pool last summer once while I was going by. In retrospect we should have just gotten out of the car and picked it up right then. But it all worked out. I hope it's okay.

It began with a duck

More precisely, a large female duck swimming in our pool. Those of us who saw her were a bit bemused, although a little concerned that she was drinking the pool water. I had noticed her because I was walking back and forth to the laundry room doing my laundry this morning (see, I didn't manage to get up at an ungodly hour Tuesday, but the more sedate 7 am worked Wednesday).

Anyway, there was the duck. The sky was cloudy, but not remarkable, that is until I got to the bus stop. As I waited, a horribly dark cloud formation crept above us, with strange bands of light and dark. I've never seen the like. It was very eerie. I snapped a somewhat fuzzy picture that still shows you what it looked like:

The strangest thing was that I was surrounded by five other people, none of which seemed intrigued by the clouds or darkening sky. They just chatted away. Now in their defence, they were from Africa and South Asia. Maybe they haven't been here long enough to realise that it was weird. Fortunately the bus arrived just as the heavens started to open up.

Unfortunately, I had to get off the bus. The umbrella was nearly useless. Cars were going around something I couldn't see, slowing traffic to a near halt, meaning I had to stand there getting wet longer. I realised when I went home later and they were putting on the finishing touches that one of the grey light poles split and fell into the road. There was a lot of thunder and lightning. I had to take my shoes off and go across the road, walking through about six inches of water there at the corner. I got in, carrying my shoes and umbrella, with a soaked backpack that's still wet in places. All in all, I did pretty well--just my feet and some on my back, and then my entire right sleeve were soaked.

One of the regulars on the bus, a retired Vietnam veteran, was going to ride it back around, thinking it would be a short thundershower. I doubt that helped. I'd looked at my phone and seen the storm coming in from the north; there was a wide band coming from the north that was all red and pink on the radar.

Despite a rocky start to the day, I got quite a bit accomplished. No one was getting off at the same time I was tonight, so I figured I'd be riding the bus home, but I did get a ride when someone went out for food for people in her department. So that worked out nicely.

The most important thing to remember today was to call my mother. It's her birthday. We talked for awhile. She was in Nicholasville; they'd gone out to eat and were at the store loading something into the car. She'd gotten my card and seemed quite happy. I'm glad she had a good birthday. We talked about family for a bit and then signed off. Then I took a 'nap'. Yeah, I know.

Now I have gotten up to take my Lantus, fix a thank you note for a co-worker who was very kind to me during the time-of-no-money (I love having a collection of cards for every occasion), and get ready for tomorrow.

I am thinking it is time to change when I eat at work, as I don't have enough time between breakfast and lunch for my blood sugar to register anything but high. I think if I ate an hour later it would be better.

Okay, I'm going to take my insulin and go to bed. I hope you have a good night. Tomorrow game notes are on the agenda, as I have some stuff to do on Saturday involving re-shelving books (so good to be a personal librarian--must put it on my résumé at some point--I've cared for a collection larger than my own, or the hospital's for about two decades now.) Does it count if you get paid in love and affection?

It must be hard being made mostly of bits of fluff sometimes...

Although even the mama duck rolls at one point. Actually, this was how walking near the Patterson Office Tower was when I was at the University of Kentucky.

Thanks to YKWIA for the link.
