I had a very odd thing happen tonight

As a customer pulled out his money, something went flying over the counter, landing behind me. Without thinking I retrieved it and handed it back.

Then it hit me.

It was a small baggie full of large opaque white crystals. I don't know what kind of drug it was, but I basically handled something highly illegal, which rather bothers me. I don't know if there was any better way to handle the situation (really, withholding it and threatening to call the police might have agitated him, and where there are drugs there are often guns). I'm thinking it was his own personal stash as a user, not a dealer, unless there were lots of little baggies in his pocket, and he didn't pull out wads of cash like I sometimes see. But still. It was unnerving, to say the list. I've never so much as held marijuana in my hands, much less something like meth or crack. (I'm not sure which it was. Is meth white?) The only drug I've done in my life was legal at the time (I tried amyl nitrate, also known as 'poppers' when I was dating my ex). [I don't think it's legal anymore, but really, I'm not sure.] Anyway, so I am not wise in the ways of the drug culture. It makes me feel both good to be that naïve in some ways, but also makes me feel like I'm a little squeaky clean Gidget type, ready to be exploited by the world. (Yes, I know, I'm not really squeaky clean/totally naïve, but you get the idea.) Anyway, it made me feel weird to say the least.

How would you have handled it?

Awful

Slaying of drug war hero's family shocks Mexico
Assailants on Tuesday gunned down the mother, aunt and siblings of a marine killed in a raid that took out one of Mexico's most powerful cartel leaders — sending a chilling message to troops battling the drug war: You go after us, we wipe out your families.
Although the marines do not have identification on their uniforms and are generally not identified in the media, the government had been very open in this case, showing the body of the drug lord and releasing the name of the only marine killed. Unfortunately, the drug cartel's goons used that information to send a message to the government and its troops that their families are not safe if they participate in raids.

This is so senseless. I know there is crime here, and drugs, and the like, but at least I have some hope that my government will protect me or at least track someone down for the crime. We had an era of the War on Drugs here in the States; in Mexico it truly is a war, and a bitter one at that. My thoughts are with the marine's two small children, who have had so much of their family wiped out in the violence and who themselves are targets of the cartel and need protection.

So I got some sleep

which was a happy thing, but I felt like crap this morning, hung over even (when really sucks when you didn't even get drunk, you know?) My blood sugar was 247 this morning before I even ate anything. After lunch, I felt very, very fatigued and foggy; I could barely focus on anything. I went ahead and tested and it was 300. It really felt like my brain was goo. Syrupy goo.

Lately I've managed to be in the 150s-170s on good days, up near 200 on bad ones. Sometimes I can blame diet as the culprit (although this afternoon for lunch I just had grilled cheese and tomato basil soup. Now granted, I had two grilled cheese. Maybe it was too much bread--it was one 15 g of carbohydrates more than I should have had, if I remember the dietician's recommendation correctly. But it's not like I was downing candy bars.) On the other hand I have eaten doughnuts at night and my blood sugar's quite good the next morning. I have found eating Margaret bread (the Amish friendship bread) late at night does elevate it, and come to think of it, I did have a piece last night, because I finished up the last one from the game while I was cleaning up. I think having just that hour of sleep and starting my period may have helped throw it out of whack, too. I think it's time to make an appointment with Dr Nesbitt--although I'm almost afraid to because I don't want to wind up on insulin. But there are a lot of different pills out these days; I hope one of them might help me with the diabetes.

Anyway, I felt crappy all day. Then I went into the gas station and did a lot of the grunt work (trash, cooler, cleaning, coffee, etc.) because we had a girl over from another store and I was more familiar with what needed to be done, so I left her on register and did a lot of running around and getting things done. That made me feel a little better (exercise helps bring the blood sugar down). I got off at 8 pm, too, so it's not like my night was shot like it is when I get off at 10. It was barely dark due to the Daylight Savings. :) That brought me up to feeling bad, rather than wretched.

Now I need to do some religious stuff (take a bath, go and pour a libation to Hekate, etc.) Then I hope I can get some more sleep. I still need to catch up.

Why am I not surprised
