Runaway sheep apparently bound for slaughter is spared

A sheep apparently bound for slaughter darted around noon through an open bay door at Nortown Collision & Glass Co. Workers corralled the animal and fed it before turning it over to the city's animal control department.

"All of a sudden I'm looking out, and a big sheep is running through the door," said Nortown Collision owner Eugene Oleszko. "He's running in between the cars and knocking things over."

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said the roughly 4-foot long, 3-foot tall sheep with a numbered tag in its ear and a purple paint stripe down its back, was seen running on Eight Mile Road before it entered the shop.

"It did have the tagging and branding that would suggest that the animal is properly licensed and sold to a butcher or slaughterhouse," he said.

Authorities have not determined who owned the sheep, Woody said.

The animal will not be slaughtered. It is to be adopted by SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary in Manchester, Mich., according to the Michigan Humane Society, which took the animal after it was captured at the collision shop.

My best wishes to the sheep. May it live a long life far away from the slaughterhouse. :)

MELBOURNE — Sheep plunged onto cars on a busy Australian highway after a truck carrying 400 livestock crashed while crossing an overpass, spilling its cargo into the path of terrified motorists below.

I remember it was awful, and that we discussed something about what should happen to the people involved, but I tried to block it out of my mind because it was just, well, awful:

In a video posted online, the two men - dressed in white overalls - held the terrified sheep behind the killing machine as its deadly blade repeatedly chopped downward.

On the "Die Guillotine" project's website, the public was invited to vote on whether the sheep gets to live or die

If the vote goes against the sheep, they plan to kill it with the guillotine live on the Internet. That's just sick, to taunt the sheep with the guillotine. And I'm sure that many well meaning people have voted against doing this to the sheep (so far they are leading those voting for death), but by voting, they're feeding into this. This is not art. This is animal cruelty, and if they follow through, I think they should definitely prosecute to the full extent of the law. Poor sheep. And while several animal rights groups have expressed doubt that they will carry it out, these two men seem to give no thought to the well-being of the animal. There's no guarantee they wouldn't just go through with it anyway.

I wonder how these two people would feel if the tables were turned and their fate was left to a vote? But that would be a reality show taken too far, right?

Titled Death and Metamorphosis, the performance was to take place this week at a small theatre in Spandau. The artist – who has not been identified – planned to use cable ties to strangle the dogs, followed by a brief meditation accompanied by funeral procession music and a giant gong.

New Zealand mourns Shrek the sheep

Shrek the New Zealand sheep, whose ability to avoid the shearers made him a national celebrity, has died.

Shrek came to prominence in 2004 after evading capture for six years by hiding in caves on the South Island.

The cunning Merino lost his giant 27kg (60lb) fleece in a televised shearing.

The 16-year-old sheep had a high-profile career. He met then Prime Minister Helen Clark, became the subject of several children's books and made regular charity appearances.

He raised thousands for charity.
