Beethoven Google Doodle tests your knowledge of composer's melodies with interactive challenge

Thursday marks 245 years since Ludwig van Beethoven was baptised, and Google has marked the occasion with a commemorative Doodle challenging visitors to put together the composer's finest creations.

Visiting the Google homepage begins an interactive story in which you must put together Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Für Elise, Moonlight Sonata and Ode to Joy.

On his way to the concert hall, a run of bad luck sees Beethoven sees his compositions destroyed in various ways, and you have to arrange sheet music in the correct order to reach the finale.

Having just come in drenched from a thunderstorm, this made me incredibly happy

My very own Google Doodle, presumably because I'm signed in to my Google account on Chrome. :)



I went this morning and got some $1 bills for the bus, got some gas, stopped by McDonald's for a couple of egg and cheese biscuits, and then dropped my car off at Mitch's Auto on Industry Road. There were several cars they had for that day, so it will be awhile before they can get to mine. I walked over to Eastland Shopping Centre and the bus came just as I was coming up to the stop. The bus driver was one I knew and we talked for awhile. Then I got down to the transit centre and transferred to my route's bus, and it started raining just as we pulled out, then thundering and lightning. By the time I got to my stop, a very cold rain (what happened to getting into the 70s today?) was coming down. My little umbrella that fit into my bag tried valiantly to keep the rain off, but my feet got drenched and my blouse and pants were pretty damp by the time I got into my apartment. The wind was such that even with being careful, the umbrella went inside out once, but recovered. Now my shoes and socks are off, and I'm going to take a bit of a break before starting on the house, as I've already walked almost three miles today, and anyway, some of what I was going to do (the re-potting and taking the trash and recyclables out) involve the great outdoors, which isn't so great at the moment.

I've been crazy busy so far this week

so no real blogging the last couple of days, for which I'm sorry. But things should settle down a bit starting tomorrow, as I won't be in scheduling and can concentrate on catching up at work. Monday night I came home and crashed again, still feeling the effects of my cold. Yesterday I felt better, and last night I did manage to go over and visit YKWIA and A for a little while. YKWIA and I watched an episode of the New Zealand show 'The Almighty Johnsons', which I found rather fun (although followers of Norse religion may not agree). It was on Netflix, and follows four brothers whose family are all descended from the Norse Gods, each one learning which he is on his 21st birthday. There are a group of Norse Goddesses who try to interfere with a prophecy concerning the youngest member of the family.

Today I weighed myself and I'm at my lowest weight in years. In fact, if I lose one more pound, it'll be 25 that I've lost this year. So I'm feeling pretty decent about that. However, it has been a challenge, particularly with the new schedule, to take all of my medicine properly and really watch my diabetes. I must improve on that.

Okay, I'm going to go listen to some music and maybe read for awhile, and generally have a quiet evening at home. Oh, and I should straighten up and work on unloading the dishwasher, etc. Things aren't bad in the apartment, but I didn't do a thing while I was sick, and there is a mountain of tissues on my bed, for example. I need to wash the bedding this weekend with the rest of the laundry; while I never officially ran a fever, I swear I got very hot and on Saturday night it felt like a fever breaking.

Oh, one more thing. I'm very excited that they managed to land a craft on a comet: Philae spacecraft makes historic landing on comet. The Rosetta mission is a great opportunity. Even Google has gotten into the celebration with a doodle. :) I didn't hear until some time after it happened, while I was at lunch, because things were so busy in clinic. But yay and congratulations!

Kudos to Google

Okay, I must confess that I didn't immediately realise it for what it was, despite being a liberal lefty who is a long-time supporter of gay rights. I don't automatically associate rainbows with gays, for one. But the rainbow-coloured 'doodle' of Google's celebrating Olympic sport with the following quote was definitely meant to show solidarity for those in Russia who are gay and the athletes competing there:

"The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter

I missed the tribbles the first time, and Uhura's spot with the soft lens like they always did with the women at certain times on the show. But it was great fun. I felt sorry for the redshirt 'e'. :) If you haven't tried it, go do so.

Google's impossibly clever Alan Turing doodle: In a doodle celebrating the 100th birthday of Alan Turing tomorrow, Google creates a conundrum that the majority of humanity simply won't understand. This is a good thing.

For more on Alan Turing, his many contributions to computer science, cryptography, and other fields, the prosecution for indecency for having a sexual relationship with another man, and his suicide, see the Wikipedia article or the one from Encyclopaedia Britannica. Turing was younger than me when he died, only 41, and that's sad, especially after his many gifts helped save lives, and yet he was convicted of a crime that quite frankly seems silly to most of us today, but through which careers and lives were unjustly ruined for many years.

Today is the 65th anniversary of Freddie Mercury's birth. Mercury, whose orginal name was Farrokh Bulsara, was a British citizen born in Zanzibar of Parsi descent, primarily growing up in India. He died of AIDS twenty years ago, but made a remarkable impression on popular music. He had a four-octave vocal range and flamboyant performing style. Google honoured him across the world today with a doodle, but left the US web page unadorned due to the Labour Day holiday, with plans to put up the Mercury doodle tomorrow instead.

I love Google's 'doodle' for today

It's honouring the 183rd anniversary of Jules Verne's birth. On the Google webpage, the actual logo can be manipulated using the lever on the right to move the Nautilus from the surface of the sea to the ocean floor. Be sure to check it out. If you're using a device with a built-in accelerometer that uses Firefox or Chrome, just tilt and it'll work, too. Enjoy exploring!
