I had these stuffed cat pillows on either side of my monitor that look very realistic, the type that's a printed image front and back that is then sewn together and stuffed with polyfill. I think they creeped the IT guy who was upgrading my computer today, because they stare straight ahead, which was a little unnerving at first, but I've long since gotten used to them.
I told myself awhile back that if I got Windows 7 at work and could use the same cat theme as I do at home, I'd go ahead and take the stuffed cats home. Well, I got that today. There are just a few glitches with the upgrade they're working on (mainly that I need to change my browser settings for DOCLINE and PubMed to work correctly, but those settings are not accessible), but otherwise it went swimmingly. And I was able to get the cat slideshow on my desktop. So, the pillows came home. My desk looks a bit bare without them, but you can only have so many cat images in one place before they start wondering about you. Especially if you don't actually have cats at home.
I saw a comic today that reminded me of my best friend. It's the comic Non Sequitur. Check out the link; Danae, the young girl, stalls for time in a very eloquent manner. :)
I'll write later. Have a good night.
Born, like other comic book characters, out of an otherwise trivial but life-changing animal bite, the Rabid Librarian seeks out strange, useless facts, raves about real and perceived injustices, and seeks to meet her greatest challenge of all--her own life.

This is funny
PhD Comics: Professional Trading Cards
There's even a template where you can make a trading card for your own professor. :)
I may not be in academia but I spent sixteen years of my life in it, so I appreciate things like this.
Thanks to PF Anderson (tweeting as @pfanderson) for the link.
Someone needs to come up with trading cards for such librarian luminaries as Melvil Dewey, Will Manley, and Nancy Pearl. :)

This can be so true...
Here's a great comic from Zack Weiner. (And yes, I saw it on JMG. I really will find something original to post tonight.
But, darn it, it's too funny to ignore.

This makes me think of Josh Hanagarne (the World's Strongest Librarian)
There is a comic called 'Baby Blues' that published two library-themed cartoons on March 3rd and 4th. Go to http://www.babyblues.com/index.php and choose the dates from the drop down box. It's the March 3rd one that reminds me of Josh--'Have you ever seen such huge biceps on a librarian?' He does a lot of weightlifting, bends nails, and tosses about kettleballs. :)
These two strips now grace my cubicle. The second 'Battling illiteracy, one dumb brother at a time' is especially apropos because although I don't work in a public library, I do run an early literacy project.
Anyway, I thought I'd share. Thanks to Tanya Feddern-Bekcan and Morgan Fuller of LIBREF-L for pointing these out.

One reason to get a normal amount of sleep
Insomnia may shrink your brain, scans show: Chronic lack of sleep linked to lower gray matter density
I rarely have insomnia (although it does happen on occasion), but I generally don't get enough sleep, although I've been doing much better now that I get home at a reasonable time at night. Still, for years I operated on about five to six hours' sleep, and it wasn't enough. I hope I haven't shrunk any grey matter--I need all the brainpower I can get, since I'm ageing and I'm not sure my brain's ever really been wired right anyway, especially with the ADD.
Speaking of ageing, cognition, and memory, and comic strips, for that matter, a co-worker showed me a great comic by Regan today and I laughed mightily:
Have a good night. I'm off tomorrow afternoon so I plan to pick up some items at the library (a CD and the next two Dresden Files books), but also do some cleaning and work on the game notes. I'll probably blog, too, though. :)

Happy birthday!
It's been eight years since the inception of the 'Unshelved' web comic. I'm glad it's still going strong and I wish Bill Barnes and Gene Ambaum much goodness to come. I wouldn't syndicate it here if it weren't wonderful. :)

Goodnight Opus, and goodbye
When I was in college, Bloom County was my favourite comic in the newspaper (well, back then it was in our campus paper, not the city one). I loved the penguin Opus--as did a friend, to whom I gave a stuffed one one year. I am an initiate in the Bill the Cat society (I cannot give details of that moving ceremony, for it is most secret). Then Bloom County ended and life was sad.
But then Opus returned in the eponymous comic strip, this time graduating up to the city paper. And Berkeley Breathed continued to entertain with his creations. But now the comic is retiring, and today was the last strip, and it went out in a way that made this librarian cry. (Okay, I cry at the drop of a hat, but still....)
Be sure to see the last published strip, then go to the Humane Society's web page to see the last frame. Thanks Great Western Dragon from LISNews for the links.
