I finally watched

Desk Set, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the meltdown the woman had who knew the computer (but didn't know anything about the information). Bunny's memory was wonderful, and while mine is not, I do tend to remember based on the association of numbers and dates. If only I could expand that to doing quick computations. I really wish I had my friend YKWIA's memory. That coupled by my knack for finding things and knowing how and where to look would make me a superlibrarian. :)

I think I'm going to head to bed and then get up to watch the NASA TV coverage of the Mars Curiosity landing. Good night.

You'll get a kick out of this

I came across a picture of me today from when I was eleven. 'Little House on the Prairie', the television series, was in full swing, since it was 1978, hence the calico dress my mother made. And I look so stereotypically like I'm going to be a librarian, don't I? Of course I haunted the school library and, later, the public one. And in high school I was a library aide. For someone who didn't intend to be one, I didn't have a chance, did I? And look at those 70s glasses!

You can read her blog or follow her on Twitter for informative posts. And be sure to read her The Creepy Librarian Stalker Hypothesis. Thankfully, I can say that this has not been a problem for me. Yet, anyway. Which is a blessing.

Jacob Two-Two and the Bookworm Brouhaha

When it comes to his nearby public library, Jacob Two-Two has a perfect record and a record as well for using it the most. When he goes the extra distance to return a book on time, the librarians notice his dedication and ask him to volunteer at the library. Jacob happily excepts and after sticking out some tough duties, is inducted into a secret society of Library Ninjas. He immediately proves himself a competent agent and is given a special assignment --- The Bookworm. The Bookworm has the world's most overdue library book, last seen thirty years ago. This book is titled Ace Hambly, Boy Detective: Adventure of the Jade Scorpion and The Bookworm has repeatedly managed to keep it hidden, despite attempts at capture. Jacob dives head-first into the assignment, but makes a surprising and disturbing discovery that stops in his tracks. He worries that foiling The Bookworm may get someone very close to him in deep trouble.

There is a comic called 'Baby Blues' that published two library-themed cartoons on March 3rd and 4th. Go to http://www.babyblues.com/index.php and choose the dates from the drop down box. It's the March 3rd one that reminds me of Josh--'Have you ever seen such huge biceps on a librarian?' He does a lot of weightlifting, bends nails, and tosses about kettleballs. :)

These two strips now grace my cubicle. The second 'Battling illiteracy, one dumb brother at a time' is especially apropos because although I don't work in a public library, I do run an early literacy project.

A timid, hair-wrapped-in-a-bun, pince-nez-wearing spinster.
Is that the image you have of a librarian from 100 years ago?
Try this one on instead:
Gun-toting, horseback-riding, walk-2-miles-to-work-in-a-blizzard type of woman.
Those were the kind of librarians who settled the West.
Around the turn of the 20th century, graduates of the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science (then called the Illinois Library School) headed to places like Texas, North Dakota, Idaho and Oregon.

PS This made it to the MEDLIB-L list and at least one person was not amused by the image of medical librarians put forth. I say, get a sense of humour. Medical librarians tend to be a quirky bunch, and most of us are proud of it.
