Brains! :)

How Quickly Would A Zombie Outbreak Spread?
While the previously reported research suggested the Rocky Mountains was the place to go if you want to survive a zombie outbreak long enough to invent a cure, the latest work has an interesting insight into where to avoid: After 28 days, it is not the largest metropolitan areas that suffer the greatest risk, but the regions located between large metropolitan areas. The area with the greatest one month zombie risk is northeastern Pennsylvania, which is susceptible to outbreaks originating in any of the large metropolitan areas on the east coast.

Zombies need brains! Zombies need libraries!

Zombies lurch down Telegraph to support libraries, brains
Oakland library supporters crawled down Telegraph Avenue Saturday evening in their zombie finest to protest the potential closure of 14 of the city's 18 libraries. The living dead, organized by the group Save Oakland Public Libraries, groaned "Zombies need brains, keep libraries open!" to passerbys in cars, restaurants, and at Oakland's Uptown galleries, and urged them to "keep Oakland brains the tastiest in California."
Thanks to Steven at Library Stuff for the link.

I think this is a great way to get people interested in emergency preparedness

Social Media: Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse

This is making the rounds, and yes, it is from an official blog by the Centers for Disease Control to get people talking about emergencies and preparing for all sorts of disasters. Since Zombies are so darn popular these days, it was natural to throw them into the mix. It is certainly getting a response. Twitter is atwitter with it, it's making the rounds on Facebook, and it's popping up on e-mail lists as well.

So, learn how to prepare for your Zombie Apocalypse--because nowhere is safe from disaster.

I'm just waiting for Those with No Sense of Humour to question why our government is putting resources into preventing Zombie Apocalypses. You mark my words, some wackadoo will.

PS You can get badges and widgets for the Zombie Apocalypse here: http://emergency.cdc.gov/socialmedia/zombies.asp. Enjoy!

Something I came across last night

I downloaded a sample of Vampire Forensics; Uncovering the Origins of and Enduring Legend, by Mark Collins Jenkins, which I plan to buy once I have about $14 I can spare. In it he quotes Peter Nicholls, editor of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction:
Vampires are aristocratic, drinking only the most refined substances, usually blood. In the iconography of horror, the vampire stands for sex. The werewolf, who stand for instability, shapeshifting, lack of self-control, is middle-class and lives in a dog-eat-dog world. The zombie or ghoul, who shambles and rots, is working class, inarticulate, dangerous, deprived, wishing only to feed on those who are better off; in the iconography of horror the zombie stands for the exploited worker.
I never quite thought of it that way. Hmmm....

Okay, this one was too fun not to take

Your result for The Zombie Awareness Test...

Survivor

Well, well. You scored a whopping 227 points.

Awesome. You have what it takes to maybe, just maybe survive the horrific future in store for all mankind. You're probably not going to shoot yourself in the face, and you're not likely going to go running off alone into the unexplored areas. Try not to drop the flashlight, and you may see the sunrise.

Cute

Because music is your friend...especially when surrounded by mutant man-eating zombies. This gives a whole new dimension to the pied piper story. Oh, and be sure to continue watching after the credits roll.

A friend wanted me to take this test. Here's how I scored.

I liked both the machete and rifle options.

Your Score: Zombie Master.

You scored 70% survivability and 60% kickass-ability!

You were born for z-day. Not only will you be killing zombies left and right, but you will be leading the other survivors. You will be the one making decisions and the person who is looked to for advice. Congratulations.

Here's another one for good measure...good night.

Your Score: Franz Kafka

Your Literary Style Is 0% Realistic, 100% Philosophical, and 66% Psychological!

Franz Kafka's literary style is so distinct that an adjective has been coined from his name to describe similar styles. That adjective is "kafkaesque". Your own writing, obviously, is kafkaesque. Kafka wrote very strange, horrifying stories. His most famous novella involves the transformation of a man into a giant insect. His works are not only fantastic and symbolic, but they are often very philsophical and thought provoking. Many of his stories are allegorical or metaphorical, focusing on the nature of spirituality and the absurdity of life. Not only that, but his work is often intensely cerebral, delving deep into the minds of his characters and examining their psychology and the motivations for their actions. Your writing follows Kafka's example by being highly philosophical, psychological, and surrealistic.

Some stories you may enjoy: "The Metamorphasis", The Castle, The Trial, and "A Hunger Artist".

The other literary styles:

Edgar Allan Poe / Jorge Luis Borges / George Orwell / F. Scott Fitzgerald / Fyodor Dostoevsky / Herman Melville / Albert Camus
