I'm sorry I haven't posted

I've been coming in too tired to type. I'll try to catch up in the next day or so. On the agenda:

• lots of library stuff, including videos, images of librarians, and cause to celebrate
  
• weird, sick news that makes you really wonder about your fellow man
  
• a lawsuit McDonald's is so going to lose--I'm sure they'll try to settle
  
• bad Latin and laughable, pathetic curses, or, my exes are at it again
  
• why I hate Louisville and its University
  
• my ankles are convex!, or, how I learnt to like a water pill, even if it makes me pee
  
• just a few days before Harry Potter, the book (I like the movies, but the book, or rather the Book, takes precedence)
  
• plus, the usual quizzes

I've felt wonky all day

but the good news is I just checked my blood sugar and it is at 126, almost normal. It has been elevated before I eat anything at the beginning of the day still, and my haemoglobin A1C was 7.5% (it should be 6% or less), and my triglycerides are up, so they want me to come in to the doctor's office tomorrow to go over my labs. Dr Nesbitt is going to put me on TriCor for my triglycerides. It's just one more pill to take. Sigh. But hopefully it will make me better.

With an eye to eating healthier I went to the co-op and found some low-carb tortillas, whole grain bread, pomegranate jelly, strawberries, and some non-Chiquita bananas (check out the post that explains why) and instead got some Dole organics. So somewhere in this town there are other brands, yay). I also got some of my favourite incense to relax to. I'm thinking of renewing my owner's membership.

I also am renewing my lease on my apartment. I called the office today and they'll draw up the paperwork for tomorrow. It's not up until May 31st, but I figured I might as well be prepared. The rent's going up $15, but that's not TOO bad. Plus I get some sort of gift for renewing. I'll have to check them out. But regardless, I have no plans to voluntarily move any time soon. It's too much trouble, and I think my friends are all moved out from the last couple of times. I think I've lived here three years now, going on four. Another few won't hurt. Plus, it's a straight stretch of road to both of my jobs.

I'm excited that Heroes is coming back tonight and I'm definitely planning on watching.

Companies in the wrong

Reed Elsevier, the publisher of many respectable scientific journals, and well known to librarians, has a little side business you may not know about. Through subsidiaries they sponsor arms fairs. We're not talking tiny gun shows, but huge events where people from all over the world, including countries with terrible human rights violations, come to buy weapons. Concerned? Read more at:

Sign the petition requesting that Reed Elsevier stop organising the arms fairs. I'm number 1019 on the list.

In other news, Chiquita, best known for its bananas, has been fined $25 million for making payments to terrorist militias in Colombia supposedly to protect its employees. Despite being told over and over again that these payments were illegal, executives continued to okay the cheques (and eventually cash disbursements) up until 2004, when they sold off their interests in Colombia. But the story has been covered by a variety of media, so feel free to Google the story elsewhere if you have an objection or are uncomfortable with their bias. Also, you can view Chiquita's statement online as well. In their favour, they voluntarily came to the Department of Justice with the information--although apparently not as soon as they should have. This fine is part of a plea agreement.
