Excellent opinion piece on the value of behavioural sciences

The Unexamined Society

It includes some interesting examples of research showing how scarcity affects psychology and also how people's perceptions--including about themselves--affect behaviour.

Okay, maybe I'm biased because I have a degree in sociology, which also borrows heavily from psychology and other social sciences. But I think there's real value in studying how we behave and how we can change self-destructive behaviours or societal problems through first understanding why people and groups act the way they do.
