Why would anyone do such a thing?

Puppy without ears finds foster home: Labrador-shepherd mix found in a trash bin after surviving a cruel attack
Sunny's hearing wasn't affected, but someone cut off his ears when he was a month old with scissors or a knife and then threw him away into a dumpster, where he was found and nursed back to health. Authorities are investigating. In San Diego, the penalty for felony animal cruelty is a state prison and a $1000 fine. A local group is offering a $3000 reward. If one puppy was abused in such a way, authorities fear there more be more animals being tortured by that person.

Inflicting such grievous harm on animals is a sign of sociopathic behaviour. People who abuse animals are capable of eventually abusing or even killing humans as well.

Whoever did this is very sick. They need intervention before it escalates. And yes, although they need treatment, they need to be in prison.
